I am the grandson of Devoyal T. Davis & Mary Davis. Devoyal served in the 5th Division on a 5'gum on the USS Guam during its WWII service. The Davis' currently live in Coushatta, LA and can be seen at most USS Guam Reunions. I grew up looking at my grandfather's USS Guam cruise book and have always had a high interest in the history of the Guam and WWII. I have just registered my grandfather and his brother, John Quitman Davis,(who was killed on the USS Arizona) into the new WWII Monument in Washington, D.C. I encourage everyone who visits this site to get and account with the website and register yourselves or your family members who served during the war.

Great hsitorical and interesting website. With the conection to the veterans, it adds the personnal touch. As one who had a uncle who paid the ultimate price with his life in WW2, I always have had an interest in history. I only wish this ship or the USS ALASKA was berthed next to the USS ALABAMA in Mobile bay, so I could take my children to visit her. May we never forget what our veterans have done for us, and our military is doing for us. God Bless you all, everyone.
I am living in Fairfield, OH near Cincinnati, OH
Commissioning Day today
Happy Anniversary to the USS GUAM CB2,commissioned 60 years ago today,September 17 1944. The most beautiful ship in the Navy.Took us to the war in the Pacific and brought us back safe and sound.
God Bless her officers and crew.

By some strange and happy coincidence I find myself visiting this website on the 60th anniversary of her commisioning! My father was Gordon Civalier, Jr. of Division E an EM1/C. He was always very proud of his service on the USS Guam. He passed away in January of 1986 and my mother still has his cruise book. I remember looking through it on many occasions and him telling some stories of his time aboard her. I have always found it ironic that he grew up in Arizona with no ocean in view and ended up enlisting in the Navy! Another strange twist of that service was his meeting my mother when the ship was being built in Camden(she lived nearby in Brooklawn NJ). (She attended one of the reunions in San Diego.) He ended up staying here and we lived nearby in Deptford. I bought the house they built in Deptford and still own it to this day. I just want to say how proud I will always be very proud of the job these men did and the service that our military men & women continue to do while in harms way! My stepdaughter recently returned from duty with the Air Force in Qutar on the Persian Gulf. My stepson is ready to continue the tradition of my father's Naval service (as well as his grandfather who was a Naval gunner in WWII) by applying for an NROTC scholarship. Currently both him and his younger sister are members of the newly formed NJROTC unit at Deptford Twp High School. He is the XO for the whole cadet corp. We are very proud of all of them!

Hello everyone. I am the son of Harold J. Crane, who served aboard the U.S.S. Guam during later WW II. He is listed as serving in 1944, and I believe was an electrician aboard ship. My father is now deceased and I would love to know if there might be a book that I might purchase that would have pictures and stories of the ship and crew during those times. He never talked much about his war time experiences. If there is such a book, it would mean an awful lot to me to have a copy. For all who have served, I thank you, and I would appreciate any info on my father or a book.

It's always good to see everyone again. Next year's reunion will be held in Norfolk, VA. 2005 is scheduled tentatively for Boston. Stay healthy...we'll see you all next year!

My grandfather, Charles E. Solomons served on the Guam from '44-'45. He was a musician second class and was in damage control. He passed away in 1998.
My father, Timothy J. Sullivan RDM2C (1915 - 2000)served on the Guam in I Division. As a youngster, he told me of his many experiences (Sampson, Newport, Miami, Ft. I was asked to check into a history of the Guam by a friend who served on her, James A. Kennedy. Am very happy to find this excellent web site. Ironically, I am here in Newport, RI at the NTC for a training course...the same place where her plankowners were trained and assembled so many years ago. Thanks for the info.

The only thig I am disappointed with is, I sent the infomation needed to join the association and sent the dues ask. So far I have heard nothing.

In answer to gene katz's inquiry, regarding the fire on the hanger deck from av gas, my father wrote in his diary on May 6, 1945:
"Had a fire in the port hanger today, but no damage
was done, as it was put out quickly. Some refuse
near the plane started to burn".
This was the only reference to a fire in the port hanger on the USS Guam, that was mentioned in the diary.
I met an aviator who was a pilot aboard
the Guam: J. D. (Shady) Ford. He retired from the Navy.
He said the Guam was the best shootin' ship in the whole damn Fleet.
He told me of a bad fire on the hanger deck from the av gas, where
they thought they might have lost the ship. Anybody out there
recall or could add to this?
My uncle, Sheldon W. Witcoff, was a plankowner
and became an RT2/c (WW2 Navy RT was a Radarman). He was responsible
for 40 mm gun radar, and told me the story of Guam's first
night kill of a kamikaze. He was selected for the Navy's V-7
or V12 (?) officer program and was highlined off Guam after she escorted the
Franklin out of the forward area, and transported back to San Francisco.
War ended as he was attending Princeton Univ. OCS program for Elex officers. He is now a
patent attorney in Chicago and thanks God for the opportunity given him by the
USN and the GI Bill. I am building the Samek 1/700 USS Guam model for him.
My father, Edward S. Grymski, was in R1 Div. and Mus2/c,
who played the sax and clarinet in the Navy band aboard the
USS Guam. While serving aboard the Guam, from Jan. thru
Oct., 1945, my father kept a hard green cover diary, and
wrote in the diary every day. He also kept a copy of "The
Mighty G" newsletter, dated July, 1945, and a copy of
"A Service of Worship" celebrating conclusion of World
War II on board the USS Guam, dated August 15, 1945. I have
typed up this diary, and will present it at the reunion in
Sept., 2002 in Colorado Springs. I hope to meet you all
in person.
wrote in ther diary every day. He describes the battles at
Sea, the activities on board the Guam, the Islands and the
natives, the typhoons, and the burial at Sea.
Willard Molitor, (2nd Div.), served during WW2, as a gunners mate. He spoke highly of the people aboard the ship and often stated, "It hurt whern I had to leave. However Willard died in April of 1988, of a heart attack. Willard was my father-in-law. Thank you for this sight. Steven P. Manuel. Millbrook, Al.
My dad, Robert Lewis Taylor from Virginia(deceased) served on the Guam 1944-1946 and was in fifth division. His time aboard the Quam was some of his fondest memories. If anyone knew him I would like to hear from you.
Does anybody out there remember Russell J.Pollard. He was in damage control and was member of crew until late 1945?
I joined the uss guam in the pacific, and was assigned to the fifth division,in the magazine hold, i was on board, when we were sent back to bayone, after the war ended , my son jeff was the one who informed me about the website and just knew of the reunions.
did not know about this web or reunions, until my one son jeff called me about it,i served in the fifth division, down in the magazine hold, and was on the uss guam joining in the pacific and on board until we were sent to bayone,n.j.
My dad, Cdr. George Keith Hudson, served on Guam from pre commissioning to decommissioning. Was navigator during the war and ended up as CO at decommissioning. I remember my dad turning me over to a Quartermaster for a tour of the ship, to the gunnersmates to crawl through the whole gunnery system, it seems like from the batteries to the keel and to the Chief Master at Arms to keep me out of trouble. As a third grader, my tour on the Guam was something I remember to this day even though she was moored at Bayonne NJ at the time. I also remember being at the decom ceremony. Even for me, it was sad. I want to tell you crewmembers that my dad was very proud of the ship and of the crew up until the day he died. I still have the cruise book here at home and the Guam, in my humble opinion, is still the greatest ship to ply the oceans, bar none.
Reference the Great China Wall. I was fortunate to view the Wall from the Signal Bridge through the long glasses that were available for our use.
I am proud to be a Plank Owner of the Guam.Spent many hours on the Signal Bridge, just below and alittle forward of the Bridge where the Captain spent a lot of time. A lot went on on those two Bridges. Left Guam Feb. 1946.Some scarry times, but I truly enjoyed being in the Navy and on the Guam I have a photo posted on this website in Images.
I did not serve on the CB-2, but on the LPH-9. But I love everything about the history of the Guam seeing all the photos of them. Keep talking guys cause its history for us.

He would never talk much about his war stories, so I'm trying to learn here, as well as to teach my children. If anyone out there remembers him, I'd sure appreciate a response. Thanks!
My father died when I was young. His name was Louis Bonisolli. I am hoping a former crew member may be have known him and could help me learn of his service during WWII. may I found a copy of the USS Guam commissioning program of 9/17/44. From this I found this website and his name on the crew list. Any help would be very much appreciated!
I am the sister of a previous guest, Wayne Oncale. Our father,
Claiborne Oncale, served on the USS Guam in the 3rd Division.
I teach World History and am more than honored to talk about the
USS Guam and the part my father played in the war. My brother also
obtained a copy of a journal kept by someone serving on the ship, and
I always read bits and parts of it to my class (along with
showing them my dad's yearbook). They are so
fascinated to see that I have a part of history right at my
fingertips. And I am more than proud to say that my father
was a part of it. I am glad to see this site and I am sure
to show it to my classes in the future. I know if my dad was
still with us, he would be very proud of this site.
I was a plank owner from 1944 to 1946 3rd division

Retired Chief HTC. Gone to all the reunions so far and met some new people. Aboard before Commissioning til end of war.
To all my shipmates and people of the world, I'm sure if we where young enough to defend our country we would be the first ones to do so after this act of cowardness. My heart goes out to all of America and the ones who lost there loved ones on Tuesday.I am also sure we will do what is required to destroy this type of thing and the people who do them. It made me feel proud after hearing my so who is 22 and his friends say they are ready to do what ever it takes to end terrorisam and what it stands for. Keep up your spirts and say we will prevail
I just wanted to say a special "thanks" to all of the USS GUAM CB2 family who have been so kind to send me notes, emails, cards and gifts expressing your thanks for the Buffalo reunion. Your kind words and gestures certainly have made the past years' work so very worthwhile. And don't forget...your "Chief Yeoman" is once again on the job working hard to find additional crewmembers of the Guam. I will keep you all posted via the newsletter of my findings.
